Osuna’s Plaza Mayor hosted the flag-raising ceremony on Monday 12 October for the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar, patron saint of the Civil Guard, and National Day. It was the first time the celebration, previously held at the barracks, moved into a public space so all residents could take part.

Mayor Rosario Andújar, Lieutenant Rafael Ruiz, head of the Osuna Civil Guard Company, and Lieutenant Colonel García Ojeda presided. Military authorities, councillors, Local Police and numerous residents also attended.

Recognition and remembrance

After the flag was raised to the national anthem, the mayor congratulated the officers on behalf of Osuna. She stressed that “the Civil Guard’s work goes far beyond pursuing offences and crimes, because it also provides support, upholds civic values and safeguards the free exercise of people’s rights”. She also thanked them for their cooperation with the Local Police.

Lieutenant Ruiz reviewed the force’s history since its foundation in 1844 and recalled that the Osuna Company protects 24 municipalities throughout the year. He thanked officers’ families and veterans.

The ceremony ended with a tribute to those who died in service and the Civil Guard anthem.
