On 15 and 16 October, Guillena held the “Recordar para no repetir” Democratic Memory Days at La Estación Civic Centre and IES El Molinillo. There were round tables and talks on memory, history and culture, several aimed at young people, and a Memory Route through different places in the municipality.

The event concluded at the Casa de la Cultura with Jesús Bienvenido’s play “Abrazo de la Tierra”.

Three projects this year

The event is one of three projects being developed this year by the Town Council’s Historical and Democratic Memory department thanks to a €24,000 grant from Seville Provincial Council. The “19 Mujeres de Guillena” Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory is collaborating.

Another project is an archaeological intervention in the municipal cemetery to locate and define a grave. The five exploratory trenches dug so far have produced no results. The next step, planned for this autumn, is a geophysical study with the University of Cádiz.

The search will also resume for the remains of Antonio García López, “Concejal Botella”, a Guillena councillor during the Second Republic who was detained and murdered in 1936 at the start of the Civil War.
